Beavers Lose Heartbreaker to Portland in Penalty Shootout

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's soccer team lost to Portland in the first round of the NCAA women's soccer championship in a penalty shootout 7-6. The shootout had to go to the eighth shooter and Portland was able to convert seven penalty kicks to Oregon State's six.
"I think the girls tonight played a great match,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “We controlled a lot of the possession. We out-shot the University of Portland. But at the end of the day you have to put the ball in the back of the net.”
The first half went scoreless for the Beavers and the Pilots with a battle between the two teams that took place dominantly in the midfield. The Beavers had several close opportunities including a shot from Justyne Freud in the 29th minute, but the Pilot goalkeeper made the save to keep it tied going into halftime.
Oregon State jumped on the scoreboard first when redshirt junior Freud sent a beautiful shot into the back of the net. Brittney Oljar recorded the assist on the goal after she played Freud into the 18-yard box.
“It is definitely something I've been working for,” Freud said. “I have had countless amounts of posts, crossbars, and everything you can imagine.”
Portland followed in the 69th minute when a Pilot forward was played into the box by her midfielder and she was able to slip the ball into the goal to tie the game 1-1 with close to 20 minutes left in regulation.
Both teams battled hard in the second half with Oregon State outshooting the Pilots 9-5 in the second half alone. Chelsea Buckland almost put the Beavers in the lead in the 66th minute when she blasted a shot from outside the 18-yard box, but it went just wide of the post keeping the score 1-1 to end regulation.
Oregon State outshot the Pilots 4-3 in both overtime periods, but wasn't able to find the back of the net for the game winner. The game was sent into penalty kicks for the first time this season for both teams.
Not only did senior goalkeeper Colleen Boyd come up big during the game with three crucial saves, she was also able to save one of the penalty kicks from the Pilots. But unfortunately for the Beavers, the Pilots were able to convert seven penalty kicks to the Beavers six to win the game.
"It was really hard to know that I saved one, touched a couple and our girls were working hard to put them away,” Boyd said. “It's a tough way to lose. I don't think it really shows anything, but there has to be a winner.”
The Beavers finished the season with an overall record of 13-5-3. They were ranked in the top-25 every week of the regular season except for one.
“I told the girls after the game that they can walk away from the today's match and the season with their heads high. You can't take away the fact that obviously we are all very disappointed but we'll bounce back and regroup and keep moving forward."
