Former Oregon State All-American Jeff Cardwell joined the Beaver coaching staff in September, 1999. Cardwell, who wrestled at OSU from 1985-88, spent five seasons as head coach at Nebraska-Kearney and three seasons as head coach at Lake Superior State.
"We're very excited to have Jeff with us," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "He's been successful as an athlete and as a head coach, and he's been a valuable asset to OSU wrestling. He's a self-starter, he's shown he's able to initiate things, he has a real knowledge of Oregon State's program and he has good communication with coaches in Oregon and with our alums."
Cardwell, 38, earned his bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education from Oregon State in 1989 and his master's degree in Higher Education from OSU in 1991.
While wrestling for the Beavers, Cardwell placed sixth in the nation at 150 pounds and seventh in the nation at 158. He also won a Pacific-10 title at 158 pounds in 1987, when he was voted the conference's Outstanding Wrestler award. Cardwell went on to win the 1988 Western Regional Olympic Freestyle title, and he also earned All-America honors in the USA National Open freestyle meet in 1985.
At Nebraska-Kearney, an NCAA Division II school, Cardwell coached wrestlers to All-America honors eight times and to Academic All-America honors eight times. In Cardwell's final season, the Lopers went 13-6 in dual meets and placed sixth at the Division II National Duals; they were also the third-place NCAA Division II All-Academic team and had five qualifiers for the national meet.
At Lake Superior State, also an NCAA Division II school, Cardwell coached wrestlers to All-America honors seven times and to two individual national titles.
Cardwell also has coaching experience as a graduate intern at the United States Military Academy, a guest coach with the Australian Wrestling Federation, and a clinician with the Nebraska Wrestling Coaches Association.
Cardwell's wife, Karen Hayes Cardwell, is a former OSU swimmer. They have four children: sons Caleb (14), Zach (12) and Josh (9) and daughter Anna (6).
