STANFORD, Calif. - The Oregon State 5,000-meters record was broken twice within half an hour Friday night at the Stanford Invitational hosted by Stanford University at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Hayley Oveson, running in her first 5,000 in nearly two years, broke the school record set by Abby Chesimet last year at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 16:34.01 which is a personal best by nearly 21 seconds. She held the school record for approximately 21 minutes before Laura Carlyle re-broke the record in the section 2 running of the event.
Carlyle broke her personal best time by 32 seconds when she ran a time of 16:19.00 finishing second in her section. Both Oveson and Carlyle's times should be good enough to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor West Preliminary Rounds held at the end of May. Last year, times of 16:55.00 and under were taken to the preliminary rounds. Jennifer Macias finished third in her running of the 5,000 with a time of 16:53.28 which was a person best time by 20 second.
"We had a great day today," Kelly Sullivan, Oregon State head track coach said following the meets Friday. "It was our best Stanford Invitational/San Francisco State Distance Carnival meets that we have had. We had a couple of good individual performances here last year but we had a lot of great performances across the board today."
Also at the Stanford Invitational, Natosha Buruse finished second in the seventh section of the 1,500 Friday with a time of 4:37.37 which is a personal best. She has set personal bests in each of her last three times out in the event. Casey Masterson paced the Beavers in the event with a time of 4:34.69 which placed her third in the fourth section of the event.
Oregon State football student-athlete Obum Gwacham finished eighth in his flight of the men's high jump. He finished with a height 6-08.00. The weather was not favorable with wet and windy conditions so nobody really put up big heights in the event.
Several members of the track team competed at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Chesimet paced the team in the 1,500 at the Distance Carnival with a time of 4:40.86 to finish fourth in her section of the event. Taylor Nowlin set a personal best time of 4:47.58 in the event.
Hillary Sharp put up a personal best time of 11:48.15 in the 3,000 steeplechase which was 34 seconds better than her previous best. Olivia Poblacion also set a personal best of 11:07.01 which is 11 seconds better than the time she ran last year.
Marsha Lampi won the 2-mile run with a time of 10:53.97 while Kristin Oenning set an outdoor personal best height of 5-03.75 in the high jump.
Oregon State will be back out on the track at the John Knight Invitational in Monmouth, Ore. April 8.
