CORVALLIS, Ore. – Down 2-0 with 20 minutes to play, it would have been easy for the Oregon State men's soccer team to fold up its tents and take a loss in Pac-12 action Friday night at wet and soggy Lorenz Field. Instead, the Beavers battled the Stanford Cardinal to a 2-2 tie to move to 6-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.
Senior forward Adam Jahn scored both goals for the Cardinal (5-5-1, 2-1-1), breaking a scoreless tie in the 59th minute on a penalty kick goal after sophomore Zach Batteer was hauled down just inside the box. Ten minutes later, Jahn struck again with a blistering shot that hit the right post and skidded across the line as it nestled into the left corner.
Down by two goals, the Beavers turned up the offensive pressure. They didn't have to wait long for their a reward as senior Emery Welshman forced a foul on a Stanford defender in the penalty area less than two minutes after Jahn's second tally in the 71st minute. Sophomore Will Seymore stepped up and delivered a penalty kick goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Beavers continued to press, but for a while it looked as though the 2-1 lead would stand. Khiry Shelton blasted a shot from 30 yards out that cleanly beat keeper Drew Hutchins, but it squarely hit the crossbar and bounced straight back out towards midfield. With just over three minutes to play, Seymore found an opening, and hit shot sailed just high.
But less than a minute later in the 88th minute, Alex Penny found the back of the net to even the score after taking a nice feed from Shelton. The goal is Penny's fourth of the campaign.
“I'm so proud of how resilient the guys were,” head coach Steve Simmons said. “A lot of teams at that point are going to fold and our guys didn't. When we got those two goals back, I thought they were on their back foot. And in that case, we are a little disappointed that we didn't go ahead and get the third goal.”

The first half was fairly uneventful as both teams battled the rainy elements and sloshy field conditions as much as they battled each other. The Beavers' best opportunity of the opening 45 came when Welshman and freshman Mikhail Doholis tried to hook up on the right side but were turned away by the Cardinal defense.
After the Beavers dry off, they have California coming to Lorenz Field on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Follow the Beavers on Twitter @OSUBeavers_MSOC and at http://www.facebook.com/OregonStateMSoccer.
