Oljar's goal and Prudhomme's eight saves not enough as OSU is defeated by WSU on the road
PULLMAN, Wash. – Despite a goal from midfielder Brittney Oljar and match high eight saves from freshman Sammy Jo Prudhomme, the Oregon State women's soccer team dropped a close one to Washington State, 2-1 Friday afternoon in Pullman. The Beavers, who answered the Cougars' first half goal with one of their own, were unable to put a second half score up on the board as they lost to WSU for only the second time in the last five seasons.
With the loss, Oregon State dropped to 11-5-2 overall and 3-4-2 in Pac-12 play, while Washington State improved to 10-6-1 on the year and 4-4-1 within the conference.
Oljar's goal came in the 40th minute of a first half which saw a mixture of steady rain and snow that coated the cold pitch. The Oregon State redshirt sophomore chipped in a ball inside the box off a pass from junior Brandi Dawson. It was Oljar's second goal of the season and Dawson's fourth assist, enabling the Beavers to even the match at one a piece.
WSU's initial score came in the 20th minute when forward Jocelyn Jeffers swatted one in off the far post, which scooted past Prudhomme and gave the Cougars and early 1-0 advantage.
Their second and what turned out to be match winning score came in the 70th minute when midfielder Nicole Setterlund put one into the OSU net from about eight yards out. The goal made it 2-1 Washington State and came off of a deflection by an Oregon State defender, giving Setterlund a second chance.
The Cougars would hold the Beavers at bay for the remaining 20 minutes of the contest, only allowing one more shot to make its way toward the Washington State goal. Leading the way in the shots department for Linus Rhode's crew was Oljar who accounted for four of the Beavers' nine on the day. Junior Jenna Richardson also added three, while Dawson and senior Megan Miller claimed one each.
In the defeat, goal keeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme made a cluster of clutch saves, including two within a five minute stretch, late in the first half. She then repeated that feat midway through the second to again preserve the 1-1 tie. The freshman stopped three shots in the contest's first 45 minutes, while making five saves in the second and now has a total of 73 on the season.
The Beavers will now have a day to rest and travel before taking on Washington in Seattle on Sunday. The match is slated to kick-off at 1 p.m. inside the Husky Soccer Stadium.
