OSU scores early but two unanswered goals by Washington takes the match to double-overtime where it ends in a 2-2 tie
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon State women's soccer team did all its scoring against Washington early Sunday, as two unanswered goals by the Huskies forced the contest to overtime where it ended in a 2-2 tie. Goals by junior Haley Shaw and senior Megan Miller gave the Beavers their two points on the afternoon, while five saves from freshman goal keeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme preserved the even score.
OSU leaves its Washington road trip with an 11-5-3 record and a 3-4-3 mark in conference play, after falling to Washington State 2-1 on Friday evening. Washington moved to 10-6-3 overall and 3-5-2 within the Pac-12 following the contest.
The Beavers wasted little time getting on the board as in the sixth minute Shaw picked up a deflection near the Husky goal and tapped it in for her second score of the season and an early 1-0 OSU lead.
Just four minutes later Miller would add to the OSU lead on a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Miller converted on her second PK of the season, sending the ball past UW goalie Kari Davidson for a commanding 2-0 Beaver lead, with not even ten minutes having gone by. For Miller, it was her team leading eighth goal of the season and marked the quickest scores for her team since they netted two in just two minutes against Arizona in Corvallis, Oct. 21.
The two goal lead would not hold up for Prudhomme and the Beavers heading into the half as UW midfielder Lindsay Elston pushed one past the freshman goal keeper in the 44th minute to make it 2-1 OSU at the match's midway point.
The home standing Huskies tied up the contest shortly after halftime as forward Jaclyn Softli took a ball from teammate Hilary Zevenbergen and sent it into the back of the Beaver net for UW's second score in seven minutes.
That second Husky goal was the final one scored in regulation as both teams would send a total of three shots toward the nets in the remaining 40 minutes, with all of them resulting in saves. Oregon State claimed one of those shots, while Prudhomme made stops on both of Washington's shots which came her way.
In overtime the OSU offense had a number of chances, with Brittney Oljar sending two shots toward Davidson's direction, one of which was one goal. Natalie Meiggs fired one more off which was wide in the second overtime and that was the extent of the Beaver offense in the extra frames. The Orange and Black defense did its job, holding the Huskies at bay in the two overtimes, with no shots coming toward Prudhomme's direction.
Leading the way in the shots category for OSU was a quartet of players who claimed a pair, including Marissa Kovac, Meiggs, Miller and Oljar. Shaw was perfect on the day, making her only one count which accounted for the first Beaver score.
Four Oregon State players were also on the pitch for the entire 110 minute marathon Sunday, those players included Kovac, Morgan Kennedy, Jenna Richardson and Gwen Bieck.
The 'Beavs have just one more match remaining in the 2012 regular season as next Friday, Nov. 2, they will make the short drive North on I-5 to Eugene to take part in the soccer version of the Civil War with Oregon. That match is scheduled to kickoff at 4:05 p.m. and will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
