Junior Austin Morehead's fall in the final match clinches the OSU victory, and third straight in the series
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - The Oregon State wrestling team retained possession of the coveted Border Axe as they defeated Boise State 21-16 in thrilling fashion Saturday night in Spokane. The first of two Border War match-ups between the schools this season came down to the very final match, with OSU junior Austin Morehead earning a pin and giving the No. 14/15 ranked Beavers their third straight victory in the rivalry series dating back to 2011.
Morehead, a junior transfer earned his first victory as a Beaver pinning Bronco Scot Bacon for six team points in the 174 lb. match. With the win, Oregon State moves to 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in Pac-12 play, while BSU fell to 0-4 and 0-1 within the conference.
The Beavers, who are now 3-5-1 against the Broncos since the inception of the Border Axe in 2009, also saw key victories on Saturday from a number of wrestlers. Those included No. 11/12 ranked Taylor Meeks who earned an 8-3 decision over BSU's Cody Dixon in the 197 lb. match, as well as No. 6 ranked heavyweight Chad Hanke who posted a 10-4 decision against Bronco J.T. Felix.
No. 4/5/6 Mike Mangrum evened his season record at 1-1 by causing Boise State's 141 pounder Travis Himmleman to fall at the 6:34 mark of the third period. Scott Sakaguchi also ranked No. 4/5/6 edged Boise's Jason Chamberlain 3-2 in the 149 lb. match, before Morehead made the difference and brought home the victory for Head Coach Jim Zalesky's Beavers.
Morehead took to the mats against Bacon in the final match of the meet with OSU trailing 16-15. At the 2:30 mark in the first period, the 174 lb. OSU junior followed a reversal by pinning Bacon and giving his team six points for the 21-16 victory over their Border Rivals.
The Beavers will have a chance to make it four-in-a-row against the Broncos Jan. 5, as they welcome in their conference foes to Gill Coliseum.
