CORVALLIS, Ore.. - Eric Moreland posted his third consecutive double-double and tied an Oregon State single-game record with six blocked shots, but Towson overcame a big second-half deficit and hit a last-second shot in overtime to upset the Beavers, 67-66, Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
Roberto Nelson made a layup at the buzzer on a long inbounds pass from Joe Burton but was called for an offensive foul that negated the basket.
The loss moves Oregon State to 9-3 on the season and snaps a five-game winning streak.
"Well, let me start off by saying how disappointed we are with how we played the second half of that second half," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "You go up 19 like we did and you have an ability to sort of make a team quit and you don't make the plays you need to make. That's what happened in this game."
The Beavers built a 44-25 lead at the 16:08 mark of the second half and looked to be in complete control, but the Tigers clawed back to tie the game at 58. Devon Collier made two free throws to give Oregon State a 60-58 lead before Jerrell Benimon answered with two free throws of his own to tie it 60-60 and send it to overtime.
"I think those guys got a little bit more physical so that we had to make tougher shots," Robinson said. "I thought that once they started a little bit of a run, we took some ill-advised shots. And then we just missed shots like you do sometimes."
Moreland had 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double, and tied the Oregon State single-game record with six blocked shots. It's the seventh time a Beavers' player has swatted six shots in a game and the second time for Moreland who had six in last season's quadruple-overtime loss to Stanford.
Burton had 15 points, Nelson added 14 points and seven rebounds and Collier finished with 12 points and eight boards.
Benimon led Towson with 20 points and 21 rebounds and Damas added 16 points, including the game winner.
The Beavers get right back to action when they host Texas-Pan American at 2 p.m. on Monday at Gill Coliseum in the final non-conference game of the 2012-13 season.
