OSU compiles 81.5 points, while Hanke, Mangrum and Meeks all place in the top three of their individual weight classes
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Oregon State wrestling team finished in fourth place at the 50th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships as senior Chad Hanke took home first place honors among his heavyweight counter parts. Hanke was one of three top five finishers for head coach Jim Zalesky as both Mike Mangrum (141 lbs.) and Taylor Meeks (197 lbs.) placed third.
Hanke went a combined 5-0 during the two day tournament, winning three matches during day one and a pair on day two. The fourth ranked wrestler in the nation defeated a total of three top five opponents en route to his second individual weight class title during the 2012-13 season.
Hanke's two matches on Sunday pitted him against the No. 1 and 3 rated wrestlers in the nation with No. 4 winning both times. The Dayton, Ore. native eliminated Central Michigan's Jarod Trice during the semifinal match and Pittsburgh's Zach Thomusseit in the heavyweight championship bout. He was one of five OSU wrestlers tabbed by event organizers earlier in the week as a contender to win an individual weight class title.
Mangrum and Meeks both lost just one match during their path to the bronze, with the 141 pounder compiling a 7-1 record during the Championships, while Meeks boasted a 5-1 mark.
The Beavers' final 81.5 point total was just 3.5 behind third place finisher Oklahoma while Illinois finished first with 99.5 points.
Oregon State now has a handful of days to rest before hitting the mats inside of Gill Coliseum for the Border War against rival Boise State. The Broncos and Beavers battle it out Saturday, Jan. 5 at 4:30 p.m. and action will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
