DAVIS, Calif. -
The No. 9 Oregon State gymnastics team put it all together Friday night in a three-team meet setting the facility record at UC Davis' Pavilion scoring 197.400. The Beavers, whose score tied the fifth-highest in school history, were led by senior superstar Leslie Mak's 39.675 all-around performance – the second-highest all-around score in OSU history.
“This really could have been a tough meet,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “We really had to maintain our focus. It wasn't a perfect meet and there were missteps but the team pulled together and overcame those obstacles. I'm really proud of how they came together tonight and accomplished this as team.”
Oregon State, which started the meet on the floor exercise for the first time this season, got off to a fast start with season-high score on the floor of 49.350. Kelsi Blalock opened the meet with a nice routine tying a career-high she originally set just two weeks ago with a score of 9.825. Olivia Vivian performed a solid routine to score 9.725 and set up the Beavers' big guns in the floor lineup. Melanie Jones followed with a beautiful routine to set a career-best of 9.950 including a 10.0 from one judge. Leslie Mak followed with another great routine to tie her career-high of 9.90. Makayla Stambaugh, a native of nearby Sacramento, came through with a career-high tying 9.95 to complete the scoring.
The Beavers carried the momentum over to the vault where they posted another season-high of 49.200, surpassing the 49-point mark for the first time this season. Blalock led the Beavers nailing a huge vault to score 9.925, while Mak tied her career-high of 9.875. Stambaugh and Brittany Harris each posted scores of 9.825 and Chelsea Tang added a 9.75.
OSU continued their outstanding performance on the bars tallying another season-high team score of 49.425. On a night of career-bests, Jones added yet another scoring 9.825 on the bars. Harris added a 9.85 to set up just preceding season-highs of 9.925 and 9.95 by Stambaugh and Mak respectively. Vivian finished the rotation with a solid routine and a score of 9.875.
The big scores didn't stop as the Beavers took to the balance beam. Mak tied her career-high with a score of 9.95 to lead the way but was set up by brilliant routines from Jones (9.90), Vivian (9.875) and Harris (9.875) as well as Blalock's 9.825 – all season-highs.
Oregon State returns to Corvallis next Friday evening to host California and UCLA for the eighth annual Pink Out meet. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets early to avoid waiting in line. The Gill Coliseum box office will open at 5 p.m. on the night of the meet and the doors will open at 6 p.m. with the meet beginning at 7 p.m.
