Beavers Fall To Washington In Entertaining Game At Gill

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jared Cunningham continued his torrid scoring pace with 23 points, but ultimately Oregon State (15-10, 5-9) fell 75-72 to the Washington Huskies (17-8, 10-3) in an entertaining game Sunday afternoon in front of a season-high 8,027 fans at Gill Coliseum.
Cunningham, a junior guard, has led or shared the high-scoring honors for the Beavers in 11 of the team's 14 league games. He now ranks 26th in school history for scoring with 1,096 points. Three other Beavers scored in double figures; Devon Collier had 16, Ahmad Starks 14 and Angus Brandt 11.
"This is a tough game for the guys in the locker room to digest because I thought their effort was terrific, but it was disappointing that we didn't make enough plays to win that game," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "That effort against Washington, who I think is the best team in this league and the most talented, to be able to stick with them and fight and execute our game plan, was great. I couldn't be more proud of them, but I wish we could have won the game. I wish we had played better on Thursday because if you win that game on Thursday, then you feel a little bit better about yourself today."
OSU's defense limited the Huskies to a season-low 34.8 percent from the field, but Washington corralled 16 offensive rebounds and made 8 of 10 free throw attempts in the last minute to hold off a Beaver rally. OSU made 16 of 26 from the charity stripe, including only 4 of 12 in the first half, and that proved to be a vital statistic for the game.
"I take all of the blame for these guys inability to do stuff because they are still young and they are still learning," Robinson added. "I tell you what though, their effort is tremendous. I also want to point out something that is a small consolation, but we haven't had two bad games in a row. I love how these guys bounce back."
The hard-fought contest featured 13 lead changes and 11 ties. The biggest lead was six points, achieved by both teams.
Washington was led by Terrence Ross with 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Oregon State returns to action this Thursday at Stanford in the front end of its final road weekend of the season in a 7 p.m. game that will not be televised.
