ST. LOUIS – The Oregon State wrestling team is in 18th place after the first two sessions at the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which are hosted by the University of Missouri in St. Louis.
The Beavers still have six wrestlers alive in the tournament. Mike Mangrum and Clayton Jack won both of their matches today, keeping them in the championship bracket. RJ Pena, Scott Sakaguchi, Pat Rollins, and Taylor Meeks are all still competing in the consolation brackets for third through eighth place and All-American status.
In Mangrum's first match of the day, he defeated Joshua Kindig of Oklahoma State. He won by a 6-4 decision in overtime, advancing him to the next round of the championships Bracket. Mangrum is now 2-0 against Kindig this season.
Mangrum defeated William Ashnault of Rutgers 6-4 in his second match of the day. Mangrum, seeded fourth in the tournament, is now set to take on no. 5 seeded Hunter Stieber of Ohio State Friday morning. Mangrum defeated Stieber earlier this season at the Cliff Keen Invitational.
Jack defeated Benjamin Apland of Michigan in his first match of the day with a 4-1 decision. This was the first time this season that the two competitors had met.
In Jack's second match of the day, he defeated Kevin Innis of Boston University by technical fall 17-2. He is now in 10th place all-time at Oregon State with 119 career wins. Jack will take on no. 6 Cameron Wade of Penn State tomorrow.
Sakaguchi won his first match with a decision win 8-4 against Matthew Nereim of North Carolina State. Sakaguchi and Nereim had never met before today's competition.
In Sakaguchi's second match, he faced off against the no. 1 seeded Frank Molinaro of Penn State. Sakaguchi and Malinaro battled till the end, with Sakaguchi getting a last-second takedown to tie the score 5-5, but because of Malinaro's riding time advantage, Sakaguchi was defeated 6-5.
Pena also won his first match with a 6-4 decision win over Corey Mock from North Carolina. Pena also beat Mock when they faced off against each other at the Cliff Keen Invitational tournament in December.
In Pena's second match, he met no. 2 seeded Derek St. John of Iowa. Pena came out quick to score the first takedown and held St. John to a low first period score, but St. John ended up defeating Pena 8-4.
Rollins was defeated in his first match of the day by no. 3 Alan Waters of Missouri by technical fall 15-0. After moving to the consolation bracket, Rollins picked up a win against Coltin Fought of North Carolina State via 3-2 decision.
Meeks was also defeated in his first match by Morgan McIntosh of Penn State 9-3. In the consolation bracket, Meeks came away with a win against Brandon Palik of Drexel via 5-2 decision.
The Beavers will return to action tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. PST when they continue the championship and consolation bracket competitions. Fans can check the Oregon State NCAA Wrestling Championship Central page tomorrow morning for live links to the competition.
