
Wrestling in 11th Place After Conclusion of Day Two at NCAAs

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Oregon State wrestling team has jumped seven spots in the overall rankings at the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and is currently ranked 11th heading into tomorrow's final day of competition.
Clayton Jack was the only Beaver to qualify for the semi-finals of his weight class in the championship bracket. He faced off against no. 2 seeded Anthony Nelson of Minnesota, but was defeated by a 4-3 decision. He will now compete tomorrow morning in a match that will determine the third place match up.
In Jack's first match of the day, he competed against Cameron Wade of Penn State in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket. Jack put in a strong showing and won via 7-0 decision.
Mike Mangrum won his last consolation bracket match of the day against Michael Nevinger of Cornell via 7-3 decision. He will face off against no. 2 seeded Kendric Maple of Oklahoma. They will be competing to see who will wrestle for third place, and the loser will move on to the fifth place match.
In Mangrum's quarterfinals match in the championship bracket, he met the no. 5 seeded Hunter Stieber of Ohio State. After a hard fought battle, Mangrum was defeated 6-5 and sent into the consolation bracket. Mangrum quickly bounced back from his loss to earn himself All-American status when he defeated Mitchell Port of Edinburgh 6-4 in his first match of the consolation bracket.
Scott Sakaguchi has had one of the tougher schedules during this tournament, meeting three ranked opponents in two days and wrestling in four matches today. In his first match of the day, he defeated the no. 11 seeded Taylor Walsh of Ohio State 7-4.
Sakaguchi then went on to defeat Kaleb Friedley of Northwestern 4-1. In his biggest win of the tournament, Sakaguchi went on to beat the no. 2 seeded Jamal Parks of Oklahoma State 6-4 and earned All-American status. Sakaguchi dropped his last match of the day against no. 10 seeded Cam Tessari of Ohio State 4-1 and will now wrestle in the seventh place match tomorrow.
Pat Rollins won his first match of the day against no. 9 seeded Levi Mele of Northwestern 6-4, but then was eliminated from the tournament by Trent Sprenkle of North Dakota State in his second match of the day.
RJ Pena also won his first match against Josh Demas of Ohio State via 10-1 major decision, but was unable to defeat no. 4 Walter Peppelman of Harvard and was eliminated from the tournament. Taylor Meeks faced off against no. 11 seeded Micah Burak of Pennsylvania, but was defeated in tough match 4-2.
Mangrum, Sakaguchi and Jack will return to action tomorrow when they face off in their respective matches to determine what places they will finish the tournament in. The wrestlebacks will start at 8:00 a.m. PST.
