CORVALLIS, Ore.. - Oregon State's starting backcourt of Roberto Nelson combined for 40 points but it wasn't enough as the Beavers fell to rival Oregon, 79-66, Sunday night at Gill Coliseum in the 338th Civil War presented by PacificSource Health Plans, NW Ford Dealers, McDonald's and Wells Fargo.
The Beavers (10-4, 0-1 Pac-12) held a 34-28 advantage at halftime in front of a raucous crowd of 8,612, but the Ducks (12-2, 1-0) opened the second half on a 15-2 run and made 53.3 percent of their shots after the break to pull away for the win in the Pac-12 opener.
"We can't play as poorly as we did in the second half and expect to win," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "It's kind of the same issue we have had had; playing just one half. This is a big disappointment in such an opportunistic game."
Starks was solid for the second straight game as he knocked down 8-of-16 shots, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, to finish with a game-high 22 points. Nelson knocked down two three-pointers and finished with 18 points and five rebounds.
After Oregon opened the second half on its 15-2 run to take a 43-36 lead, the Beavers responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game and took the lead at 47-46 when Starks made two free throws with 11:02 to play. The Ducks answered with a 9-0 spurt to lead 55-47. The Beavers got no closer than five points the rest of the game.
Devon Collier came off the bench for 10 points and seven rebounds, and Eric Moreland just missed his fifth consecutive double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Beavers return to action on Thursday when they host Arizona State (12-2, 1-0 Pac-12) at 8:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.
