Hayes' RBI, Boyd's Start Shut Down Aztecs

SAN DIEGO - Danny Hayes' laced a two-out single to left in the eighth inning to snap a scoreless tie and Matt Boyd shut down San Diego State for 8 1/3 innings to give the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team a 2-0 win over the Aztecs Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Hayes found the gap in left on a 1-2 pitch from SDSU starter Philip Walby and drove in Tyler Smith.
Hayes' game-winning hit backed an outstanding starting performance by Boyd. The left-hander, in just his fourth career start, scattered five hits and one walk in 8 1/3 innings of work. He threw 117 pitches, 85 of which went for strikes, and struck out a career-best nine.
Boyd retired the first six batters he faced, and after allowing runners to reach the corners in the third on consecutive hits, retired the next 13 before allowing a two-out base hit in the seventh.
The win pushed Boyd to 2-0 on the year and 13-1 all-time at Oregon State. He is 8-0 in games played away from Goss Stadium.
Hayes' single broke a seven-inning stalemate between the clubs which included just six hits - two by Oregon State. Up 1-0, Oregon State added an insurance run when Hayes, who had moved to third on a two-base throwing error on a pitch in the dirt, scored when Dylan Davis doubled down the left field line.
Walby took the loss for San Diego State and is 0-1 on the year. The right-hander went 7 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out nine.
The Beavers finished with five hits as a team - Hayes accounted for two.
Scott Schultz picked up the save for the Beavers after getting the final two outs in the ninth. It's his first save of the season.
Oregon State is up 2-0 in the series and is 6-0 on the year while San Diego State dropped to 3-2.
The Beavers and Aztecs match up for the third game of the series Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium with a scheduled first pitch of 1 p.m. PT.
