Freshmen 8+, JV 8+ and Varsity 8+ all come out victorious, with the JV 8+ coming out on top in one of the closest races in OSU rowing history
VICTORIA, B.C. - The Oregon State men's rowing team finished up a successful Saturday on Elk Lake in British Columbia, taking three out of four races against host University of Victoria.
Leading the way for the Beavers was the Freshmen 8+ boat which sailed away to an 8.5 second victory after being neck and neck with the Vikes for half of the race. The boat of freshmen was coxed by Mac Myers and finished in 6:16.3 during the first race of the day.
Next up for OSU was JV8+, which proved to be the closest and most thrilling race of the day. The boat, led by coxswain EmilyAnne Pillari, featured Ty Louis (8), Chris Nofziger (7), John Broc (6), Will Gangmark-Strickland (5), Henry Stout (3), Dylan Nelson (2) and Andrew Satterlee (1). The nine crew members engaged UVIC in another close race, but this one came down to the wire as OSU and the Vikes crossed the finish line at nearly the exact same time, forcing an official video review to determine the winner. In the end, the Orange and Black were declared winners by a single inch.
"It was the first time in my 11 years at OSU that we had to review the video frame by frame to pick out the winner," said men's head coach Steve Todd. "It was a battle for the whole 2K and neither boat could get more than a one seat lead. UVIC was closing fast in the last few meters but we held on for one of the closest races in OSU rowing history."
Following the closest of victories, Oregon State played catch-up during the Varsity 8+, where it finally pulled even with Victoria at the 500 meter mark. Coxswain Eric Sumner's boat continued that pace through the second 500 meters but then pulled away at the halfway point to cross the finish line at 6:00.5, 1.5 ahead of UVIC.
The final race of the morning, the home standing Vikes would steal their one and only win, edging out OSU's third Varsity 4+, 6:58.3 to 7:03.6.
"We had a great first competition of 2013," Coach Todd said after the morning of competition. "UVIC and OSU were very well matched. This series of close races really gives the team a good idea of what to focus on next."
What is next for Todd and his team is a Sunday morning scrimmage with the Vikes and then a few weeks of rest and training before an away competition against Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. That race takes place Sunday, March 24 on the Spokane River.
