OSU's No. 19 Varsity 8+ boat squared off against Cal's No. 2 vessel in the morning's first race
VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Oregon State men's rowing team hung tough with California on Vancouver Lake in Washington, Sunday morning, but settled for second in four races with the Golden Bears.
OSU was runner-up to Cal-Berkeley in the Varsity 8+, JV 8+, Freshmen 8+ and Varsity 4+ in Vancouver, with the closest race coming in the Varsity 4+.
"California brought their best today," said Oregon State head coach Steve Todd. "Our guys went after the race and really tried to focus internally on what we could do".
The No. 2 ranked Golden Bears finished first in the Varsity 8+ race matched up with No. 19 OSU's boat. Cal crossed the finish line in 5:34.20, while the Beavers finished with a 5:58.00 time.
The JV8+'s took to the course next where the Bears' boat finished with a 5:41.97 time, while the `Beavs ended the race in 5:56.4. Oregon State then claimed second in the dual's final two races with a 5:58.83 time in the Freshmen 8+ and a 6:42.01 performance in the Varsity 4+.
"Vancouver Lake was a great venue this morning," Todd said. "We had perfect conditions with just a small variable tailwind all morning. Special thanks to Alan Stewart and Vancouver Lake Crew for their help in setting up the race course and facility."
The Beavers now focus their attention toward the Windmere Cup in Seattle, Saturday, May 4, which will be their final tune-up before the Pac-12 Championships, scheduled for May 19 in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
