CORVALLIS, Ore. - Matt Boyd struck out a career-best 12 while scattering three hits and one run to help send the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 6-1 series-opening win over California Friday night in front of 3,180 fans at Goss Stadium.
Ryan Barnes drove in the game-winning run with a three-run double in the third and Michael Conforto plated two more with a single in the fourth to provide the Beavers' offense. Oregon State won its fifth consecutive game over the Golden Bears (21-24 overall, 9-13 Pac-12 Conference) and improved to 35-8 on the year and 15-4 in Pac-12 Conference play.
The 3,180 in attendance - the third-largest crowd at Goss Stadium since the 1999 renovation and expansion - saw Boyd surpass his previous career-high of 11 strikeouts, which came earlier this season against both Arizona State and last week against USC.
Boyd picked up his ninth win of the season after throwing 108 pitches in 8 1/3 innings. He allowed a single to Andrew Knapp in the first, a home run to Devon Rodriguez in the seventh and a single to Rodriguez in the ninth.
The lefty finished with his 10th quality start in 12 appearances this season and he has posted one in all seven Pac-12 games. He is a perfect 5-0 at Goss Stadium this season and 10-1 lifetime.
The win was also the 20th of Boyd's career.
The Beavers manufactured a bases-loaded situation in the third before Barnes' bases-clearing double. Max Gordon singled, and moved to second on a one-out single by Andy Peterson. Two batters later, Dylan Davis walked, setting the table for Barnes, who drive in all three on a 2-1 double down the right field line.
Conforto added to the lead with a two-run single with the bases loaded in the fourth for his sixth multiple-RBI game of the season. Jake Rodriguez completed the Beavers' scoring with a sacrifice fly to left in the eighth, allowing Kavin Keyes to score.
Keyes and Hayes tallied two hits apiece to lead the Beavers, who finished with nine overall.
California starter Ryan Mason lasted three innings, allowing four hits and four runs while walking three. He dropped to 5-3 this season after taking the loss.
