OSUs' JV 8+ and Freshmen 8+ boats highlight competition in front of 30,000 fans during the official opening of boating season in the Emerald City
SEATTLE, Wash. – Highlighted by a third place finish in the JV8+, the Oregon State men's rowing team wrapped up a successful day of competition Saturday in Seattle at the 27th annual Windermere Cup.
The Beavers' bronze performance came during the Erickson Cascade Cup between Washington and Cornell, which took first and second. OSU and Dartmouth were near neck-and-neck during the race's final 500 meters, but senior Ty Louis sitting in the stroke seat, helped his boat surge past their Ivy League counterparts, crossing the finish line less than a second ahead of them, 6:15.6 to 6:16.5.
"It was a great effort from the JV,” OSU head coach Steve Todd said. “They stayed competitive with Cornell and held off a fast charging Dartmouth crew."
In other racing action, OSU's 'A' and 'B' boats kept pace with each other for the majority of the Varsity 4+ race, with Washington's 'A' and 'B' shells taking first and second, followed by Oregon State's 'B' with a 7:02.8 time and the Beavers' 'A' in 7:04.1.
Oregon State's Freshmen 8+ boat hung tough with Washington, which featured one of the fastest Frosh 8+ crews in the nation. Novice coach Gabe Winkler's boat settled for third in the event, with a time of 6:20.6, behind the Huskies' 'A' (5:57.1) and 'B' (6:13.1) boats.
"For the freshmen it was really about the experience today and seeing the spectacle of Opening Day,” Todd explained. “They made an improvement from last week versus Cal and they are now looking towards Pac-12's.”
Todd saw one other OSU shell race in the Windermere Cup, which is the official opening of boating season in the Seattle area. His Open 8+ boat finished fourth, with a time of 6:46.7, behind Washington State (6:28.7).
Like Coach Todd said, his team now focuses its attention on the Pac-12 Championships, which will take place, Sunday, May 19 in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
