CORVALLIS, Ore. - Danny Hayes walked with the bases loaded in the ninth to send the fourth-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 3-2 win over UC Santa Barbara Saturday in front of a Goss Stadium record 3,535 fans on Saturday.
The Beavers' victory sends Oregon State to a place in the Corvallis Regional Championship Game against either the Gauchos or Texas A&M. The clubs play at noon for the right to face the Beavers.
Andy Peterson reached on a one-out bunt single, and moved to second when Michael Conforto was hit by a pitch. The duo moved up on a groundout and the Beavers loaded the bases on a 3-1 walk by Ryan Barnes against reliever Dylan Hecht.
Hayes started off the at bat down 0-2 but worked Hecht to a 3-2 count before walking on a pitch that was inside and went to the backstop. The bases-loaded walk sent Oregon State to its second one-run win in the regional.
OSU (47-10 overall) is 12-2 in one-run games this season.
Barnes opened the game's scoring with a solo home run in the second, but saw the Gauchos jump out to a 2-1 lead in the third. Three innings later, however, Barnes came up big again with a run-scoring single to right center.
Neither team managed much the next two innings, although the Beavers left the bases loaded in the seventh.
Andrew Moore started for the Beavers and threw a gem, scattering five hits and two runs - one earned - over eight innings. He struck out six and walked two to pick up his 13th win of the season.
Justin Jacome started for the Gauchos (35-24) and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and two runs. He was lifted for reliever Greg Mahle in the seventh. Mahle, who allowed two hits and a run, took the loss as Peterson was his runner in the ninth. He fell to 7-5 on the year.
Petrerson, Barnes, Kavin Keyes and Dylan Davis all had two hits for the Beavers, who finished with 10. Moore and reliever Max Engelbrekt, who earned his fifth save, held UCSB to just five hits.
Should UCSB win the first game Sunday, OSU will be the home team at 5 p.m. If Texas A&M wins, Oregon State would be designated as the visiting club.
Regardless, the game will begin at 5 p.m. and air on ESPN3.com. ESPNU may carry live updates of the game.
