CORVALLIS, Ore. – Six Beavers scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game, as the No. 20/21 Oregon State women's basketball team topped Concordia 92-35 Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers shot 51.4 percent (38-for-74) in the contest, compared to 19.6 percent (10-for-51) for the Cavaliers, as Oregon State dominated the game from start to finish.
“Every time you go out there you want to get better,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “Today I thought we improved in a lot of areas, and especially in our defensive positioning. We anticipated well, we played angles well and we handled on-ball screens accurately. Offensively we did a great job of sharing the ball. I think we played a very good overall game today.”
Junior Ruth Hamblin scored in double figures for the third-straight game, hitting 8-of-9 shots on her way to 17 points. She added 11 rebounds and four blocks to complete her second-straight double-double, the 10th of her career. She was joined on the post by freshman Marie Gülich, who finished with 14 points, scoring in double-figures for the first time in her collegiate career.
As a team, the Beavers (3-0) tallied 30 assists in the contest, four short of a school record, and forced 15 turnovers. They also outscored the Cavaliers 48-14 on points in the paint, 25-0 on points off turnovers and 29-6 on second-chance points.
“I thought we just came in with the right mindset,” Hamblin said. “We didn't relax, and we wanted to play our best basketball, which I thought we did.”
Junior Jamie Weisner posted her first double-double of the season, and the eighth of her career, as she knocked down four three-pointers on her way to a 16-point, 13 rebound performance. Sophomore Sydney Wiese joined Weisner with an impressive showing from downtown, hitting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc to finish with 12 points and five assists. Wiese now has 119 three-pointers in her young career, placing her just two short of Sage Indendi for fifth in school history.
Sophomore Gabriella Hanson was efficient on the offensive end, going 5-for-7 for 11 points. Fellow sophomore Kolbie Orum rounded out Oregon State's double-digit scorers, putting up eight of her 10 points in the second half.
The Beavers scored the first seven points of the game, on their way to an early 22-3 lead. Oregon State continued to roll from there, jumping out to a 52-9 advantage at the break. The Beavers would not look back in the second half, extending the lead as high as 59 en-route to the 57-point victory.
The Beavers will head to Hawaii this week to take part in the Tom Westin Invitational. Oregon State will face Butler on Thursday before taking on BYU on Saturday.
