Beavers Show Depth with Strong Racing in Seattle
November 03, 2014 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon State men's rowing team put in another strong performance demonstrating impressive depth through its top three crews at Sunday's Head of the Lake Regatta.
“Today was a great end of the fall season race.” Oregon State interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “This performance really gives us a place to start with our winter training. This kind of performance will really keep the guys motivated until we race again in the spring.”
The Beavers Varsity 8, which was made up by Bobby Vernazza, Aidan Daly-Jensen, Henry Prosser, Josh West, Spencer Smith, Kelly Murray, Grant Van Kampen, Nathan Smith and coxed by Eric Sumner, raced to a second place finish behind Washington with a time of 16-minutes, 57.98-seconds.
Oregon State's Junior Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 crews both rowed to fourth place finishes with only Washington boats posting faster times. The Beavers' JV8 of Ben Augeri (coxswain), Martin Forde, Callum Davies, Tyler MacDonald, Clark Fisher, Austin Erickson, Jesse Maritz, Collin Griffitts and Taylor Heen, time of 17:25.20 was fast enough that it would have placed third in the Varsity 8 heat.
After a 15-minute break, the Beavers put three Varsity 4+ crews back in the water for the Men's V4+ race. OSU's 'A' boat coxed consisting of Prosser, Murray, Van Kampen, Daly-Jensen and coxed by Ben Augeri earned OSU's top finish in fifth with a time of 18:29.68 only behind four Washington boats. OSU's 'B' and 'C' crews came in sixth and eighth.
“I'm really happy with the depth of this team in the JV and Third Varsity. These guys are young and they are really coming on strong.”
The Beavers will be idle until returning to racing Mar. 7 at the University of Victoria.
