Beavers Sweep UVic in Eights

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Oregon State men's rowers raced for the first time in 2015 Saturday morning sweeping the University of Victoria at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta. The Beavers put three boats in the water and all came away as victors.
“I'm excited for these guys,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “This was the first opportunity that they've had to show their hard work from the fall and winter. It really gives us a great starting point for the season.”
The Beavers' Varsity 8, which was made up by Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Henry Prosser, Aidan Daly-Jensen, Taylor Heen, Martin Forde, Spencer Smith, Grant Van Kampen and coxed by Eric Sumner, raced to a 10-second win with a time of 5-minutes, 32.83-seconds well ahead of the Vikes who finished in 5:43.03.
Oregon State's Junior Varsity 8 came out on top in the day's closest race. The Beavers' JV8 of Ben Augeri (coxswain), Alec Martin, Nathan Smith, Jordan Zielinski, Collin Griffitts, Michael Jagielski, Tyler MacDonald, Clark Fisher and Henry Stout held off the UVic boat 5:40.99 to 5:46.94.
In the early race, OSU's Freshman 8 crew raced to an easy open water victory. OSU's Frosh 8 coxed by Ercoli Crugnale and powered by Jesse Martiz, Sasha Kosek, Alec Dulude, Liam Kucey, Austin Erickson, Callum Davies, Neall Koetje and Baxter Call defeated the Vikes by 27-seconds with a time of 5:46.57.
The Beavers race again Sunday morning when they'll put three four-man crews on the water beginning at 9 a.m.
