Beavers Drop Match at No. 6 Stanford
October 09, 2015 | Women's Soccer
STANFORD, Calif. – A second half surge by the Oregon State women's soccer team was not enough to overcome an early deficit, as the Beavers fell to No. 6 Stanford 3-0 Thursday evening at Cagan Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
Senior Gwen Bieck led the Beavers with two shots in the contest. McKenzie Redberg, Nikki Faris, Natalie Higgins, and Jenna-Lee Baxter also tallied shots in the match.
Sophomore goalkeeper Bella Geist made 10 saves in the contest, bringing her career total to 181, as she continues her ascent up the Beavers' (5-4-3, 1-3-0 Pac-12) all-time saves list.
The Cardinal (10-2-0, 4-0-0) jumped in front early on, finding the net on a headed goal in the second minute. The Beavers responded by taking their first shot of the match in the fourth minute, but Faris' effort from distance was high.
Stanford created another chance down the left side in the 26th minute, but Geist made a nice save to palm the ball out of play. Geist came up with another big save seven minutes later, robbing the Cardinal of an opportunity from point-blank range. Stanford would get one through in the 36th minute, however, to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Oregon State controlled more possession in the early portion of the second half, as it looked to press forward. Redberg had an opportunity on a scramble in the box in the 65th minute, but her shot sailed high.
Despite a late push from the Beavers, Stanford was able to find the net with a shot from distance in the 85th minute to take the three-goal victory.
The Beavers will return to action Sunday when they head across the bay for a matchup with California.
