Beavers Race Past No. 17 Louisville, Minnesota
April 05, 2015 | Women's Rowing
LOWELL, Ore. – The Oregon State Varsity 8 women's crew posted two wins over No. 17 Louisville and Minnesota on Saturday at the Oregon State Classic.
The Second Varsity 8 went 3-1 against Louisville and Minnesota and the Beavers capped off a sunny day of racing on the 2,000-meter course at Dexter Reservoir by going 4-0 against Oregon in Open 8 and 4 races.
No. 5 Stanford and No. 8 Washington also competed in a strong field that included the three ranked teams and two others (OSU and Minnesota) who were on the cusp of Top-20 consideration after receiving votes in this week's CRCA/USRowing coaches poll.
Racing was split between morning and afternoon sessions.
In the morning, OSU's Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 swept their races against Louisville and Minnesota on calm waters. The Varsity 8 crossed in 6:29.3, six seconds ahead of Louisville; the Second Varsity 8 finished in 6:34.8, edging the Cardinal by .6 seconds.
“The Varsity 8 did a great job from start to finish” to capture the three-boat competition, OSU coach Emily Ford said. “They got out ahead, stayed steady, consistent and aggressive and in the last 500 they just walked away with it.
“The Second Varsity 8 race was amazing, it was inch-to-inch all the way down the course and it was a great fight by our team. We won that in the last 20 strokes. They did a good job and shined strategically when they needed to.”
The wind led to rougher conditions and slower times in the afternoon, but didn't prevent the Varsity 8 a third-place finish and repeat wins over the Gophers and Cardinals. OSU finished in 6:49.6, two seconds ahead of fourth-place Minnesota.
The Varsity 8 consisted of Anna Taylor, Jessica Stewart, Emily Wright, Bayly Camp, Paige Phillips, Lauren Still, Chen Oshri, Saasha Bruce and coxswain Simone Oberholzer.
The Second Varsity 8 finished fourth in the afternoon (6:57.0), just behind Minnesota (6:55.3) and well ahead of Louisville. The Second Varsity 8 was comprised of Mimi Grosselius, Mikaela Kramer, Katie Low, Bre Burns, Kyrie Miller, Isabella Preble, Tess O'Leary, Julie Stark and coxswain Arcata Leavitt.
“Louisville and Minnesota are great competitors,” Ford said. "It's great to have that level of competition here.”
The Beavers began the day with a 1-2-3 sweep of Oregon in the Open 4 race. The OSU “B” team took first in 7:36.6, about two seconds faster than the “A” boat.
“They are a club program so we don't race them too often,” Ford said of the Ducks. “It was nice to get our shot at a Civil War and to come out ahead with all three boats. That was a great way to kick off the day.”
The Beavers are idle next weekend. They return to action at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C., on April 18-19.
