AURORA, Ore. – The Oregon State women's golf team had a solid start at the Rose City Collegiate on Monday, shooting an 8-over 584 to put them in third place and only three strokes out of the lead heading into the final round.
The Beavers shot a 6-over 294 in the morning and followed that with a 2-over 290 in the afternoon at the par-72, 6,057-yard Langdon Farms Golf Club. The 2-over 290 was the second-best afternoon score in the 15-team field.
San Francisco and Fresno State are tied for the lead after posting a 5-over 581 at the two-day, 54-hole event.
This is the sixth year of the Rose City Collegiate, a tournament the Beavers won in 2013 and finished second in 2010 and 2012.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes, and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. Oregon State will start at 8:55 a.m. on the first hole and be paired with San Francisco, Fresno State and Nevada.
“We talked a lot about focusing on the process this past week as part of our preparation for this event,” Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo said. “All five of our players committed to their individual process today. We look forward to continuing that mindset and playing with some passion and pride for OSU tomorrow.”
Three Beavers -- senior Chelsea Saelee, sophomore Haley Nist and freshman Olivia Benzin -- are all tied for seventh place after shooting a 1-over 145. Saelee and Benzin both posted scores of 72-73, and Nist opened the tourney with a 74 before firing a career-best 1-under 71 in the afternoon.
Nist had two birdies and only one bogey in the second round for her first career round in red figures. She shot an even-par 72 in her first collegiate tournament last season at the Oregon State Invitational at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
Senior Ashlee Pickerell is tied for 21st place with a 6-over 75-75--150 and sophomore Hannah Swanson is a stroke back with a 7-over 77-74--151 to put her in a tie for 24th place.
Ayaka Suzuki of San Francisco holds the clubhouse lead with a 5-under 139, and Amanda Myers of Northern Colorado and Vanessa Ha of San Francisco are tied for second with a 2-under 142.
