Beavers Fall to Gonzaga in Season-Opener

LOWELL, Ore. – Oregon State's women's rowing team opened its spring season at Dexter Lake Saturday morning falling to No. 18 Gonzaga in five races.
“The 1V and 2V4 put up the kind of fight we are looking for on the race course,” head coach Emily Ford said. “It was disappointing to end up on the short end of those battles, but those two crews got a lot of it right.”
OSU's Varsity 8 raced in a tight competition with the Zags covering the 2,000-meter course in a time of 6-minutes, 41.02-seconds, coming in two and a half second behind the Bulldogs.
In the Second Varsity 8, it was once again Gonzaga crossing the finish in a time of 6:54.19 ahead of OSU, which finished in 7:08.16.
Gonzaga earned a win over Oregon State's in the Varsity 4+ crossing the finish line nine seconds ahead 7:56.62-8:05.41.
The Second Varsity 4+ race was the closest of the day with just a single second separating the two crews. Gonzaga came in ahead of the Beavers with times of 8:02.50-8:03.57.
OSU's crews from the fours doubled up to form the Third Varsity 8, finishing second (7:20.59) between a pair of boats from Gonzaga, whose 'A' boat came in with a time of 7:13.60, and the 'B' boat with a time of 7:33.20.
Saturday's regatta was a tune up for next month's Oregon State Classic. The Beavers will return to the waters of Dexter Lake, Saturday, April 2, when they host Central Florida, Oklahoma and Seattle Pacific, in addition to Pac-12 foes Oregon, Stanford and Washington.
