Picknell, Collins set OSU records
March 20, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
Portland, Ore. – Rachel Picknell (pictured) and Devin Collins set school records to lead the Oregon State track & field team to victory at this weekend's Lewis & Clark College Spring Break Open, its first outdoor meet of the season.
The Beavers also had five other school all-time top 10s at the two-day event. It started on Friday with the hammer and javelin at Clackamas Community College; the remaining events were held Saturday at Eldon Fix Track at Griswold Stadium.
On Friday, Picknell took first place and broke her own school hammer record with a throw of 165-7.25, a PR by more than five feet. Her old mark was 160-4, set in 2014.
On Saturday, Collins won the 100 hurdles in 13.81 to break Jenna Stark's 28-year-old school mark of 13.87, set at the 1988 Pacific-10 Conference championships, the program's final meet before it was suspended for nearly two decades.
A junior transfer from Sacramento State, Collins won the 400 hurdles in 1:00.96, the third-best time ever and just over a second slower than Stark's 29-year-old school mark of 59.72.
OSU scored 142.5 points to outdistance Portland State (112) for the team title. OSU also defeated the Vikings, Portland and Seattle U. in the dual-meet portion of the 21-team event.
“We had a fantastic opening meet in each event area: throws, jumps, sprints, hurdles and distances,” OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. “It was a great way to get 2016 going, coming off finals academically, with school records by Rachel and Devin and all the other top performances.
“Devin Collins really showed what a talented, great addition she is in both hurdles races. We had so many other gritty and consistent performances across the board. Our 1500-meter group ran really well, with their fastest opening performances ever.
“Now we have four days off for spring break and will gather again on Thursday, with a big season ahead.”
The Beavers had plenty of other outstanding performances to complement Picknell and Collins.
· Melissa Ausman won the discus in 162-6, and was third in the hammer at 163-1.75, a PR by nearly eight feet and the second-best performance in school history.
· Kerissa D'Arpino won the 100 meters in 12:03, and placed second in the 200 in 24.68.
· Morgan Anderson was second in the 1500 in 4:29.27. Kristiane Width won her section in 4:40.85.
· Bethany Imperial was third in the triple jump at 38-0.25, the No. 3 all-time mark.
· Helen Ann Haun and Gillette Field both cleared 11-11.25 in the pole vault; Haun took first place on fewer misses.
· Allison Jackson took second in the high jump at 5-5.25.
· Jazmin McKenzie won the long jump in 19-3.50, an outdoor PR by nine inches and the No. 4 all-time mark.
· McKenzie Byrd placed 11th in the hammer at 134-2.50, a PR by nearly six feet and the third-best mark in school history. Byrd was also OSU's top finisher in the javelin, placing 11th in 125-10, and placed fourth in the discus at 134-6.
The Beavers resume action on Saturday at the Charles Bowles Invitational at Willamette University in Salem.
OSU's lone home competition is the third annual High Performance Meet, which this year has been expanded to a two-day event. It is scheduled for April 29-30 at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
