Beavers Finish 7th at Pac-12 Championships
May 15, 2016 | Women's Rowing
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Oregon State women's rowing team finished seventh at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships regatta on Lake Natoma Sunday.
“As always, the Pac-12 Championships delivered awesome racing,” head coach Emily Ford said. “The 2V (Second Varsity 8) had the race of the day for us, besting USC and finishing closely with UCLA.”
The Beavers' Second Varsity 8 provided OSU's best result finishing sixth. The Beavers' 2V8 crew comprised of Mimi Ballinger, Olivia Ashby, Ellie Lesch, Meagan McKinney, Natalie Sarff, Liz Matzdorf, Lihani du Plessis and Lily Banks and directed by Arcata Leavitt, battled a crew from UCLA throughout the 2,000-meter race, holding a narrow half-second lead at the midway point. But the Bruins pulled ahead in the final 1,000 meters to earn fifth by .3-seconds.
In the Varsity 8 race, the OSU crew was five seconds behind Washington State and UCLA for fifth place. However, the Beavers increased the pace in the final 1,000 meters of the race cut the gap in half on the Bruins but came up short.
OSU's Varsity 4+ raced hard through the opening 1,000 meters and remained within striking distance of Washington State and UCLA at the halfway point. But the Beavers didn't have enough gas posting a time of 7-minutes, 45.704-seconds.
On Saturday, Oregon State rowed its Novice 4+ crew in the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships regatta where the Beavers' crew finished second, behind California and ahead of Colorado.
Selections for the NCAA Rowing Championships will be announced by the NCAA this week.
