Geist Sets Oregon State Saves Record
September 28, 2017 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Senior goalkeeper Bella Geist became Oregon State's all-time career saves leader Thursday afternoon, as she tallied her 348th career stop in a matchup with No. 7 USC. The nationally ranked Trojans took the win, however, topping the Beavers 4-0 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Geist's record-breaking save came in the 81st minute as she moved to her left to handle a floating attempt. She finished the match with 11 stops, bringing her career total to 349, as she surpassed Michelle Mitchell (1993-96) on the Beavers' all-time list.
USC jumped in front early on, scoring the first goal of the match less than three minutes in. The Beavers came close to answering just a minute later when Emery Wallerich got on the end of a cross, but her effort was saved.
Kathryn Baker came up with a big block in the 17th minute, sticking her foot in front of a shot from close range. The Trojans would add a second a few minutes later, however, converting a header off a corner kick. The Oregon State defense would hold firm for the remainder of the first half, as the Trojans took a two-goal advantage into the intermission.
The Trojans came up with a goal in the 68th minute to stretch the edge to three. Kaillen Fried came close to pulling one back in the 77th minute, but her effort curved just over the crossbar. USC added one more to take the win by four.
Wallerich and Jessi Witherington both made their first career start in the match.
Oregon State will face another tough test on Sunday, when the Beavers head to Westwood for a matchup with No. 1/1 UCLA.
