Lemmond Scores, but Beavers Fall to No. 1 UCLA
October 01, 2017 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sophomore Taylor Lemmond scored her first goal of the season, but the Oregon State women's soccer team was unable to upset the top-ranked team in the nation, as No. 1 UCLA took a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.
Lemmond's goal came in the 76th minute, when the forward fired a shot past the keeper from the top of the 18-yard box. Emma Jones and Natalie Higgins were both credited with assists on the score.
The Bruins jumped in front early on, converting from close range less than two minutes in. UCLA would add another just five minutes later to go up by a pair.
Oregon State created its first attacking opportunity of the match a few minutes later, when Jones made a run down the left side looking to setup a cross. Kayla Latham took aim with a shot from distance in the 18th minute, but the effort sailed wide.
The Bruins came close to finding the net in the 25th minutes, but goalkeeper Bella Geist made a nice reaction save to stymie the chance. Jones followed that up with a left-footed shot in the 34th minute, but the effort was saved.
UCLA added another goal before the break to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
The Beavers came close to pulling one back early in the second half, after a cross from Lemmond led to a scramble in the box.
Lemmond would follow that up by finding the net with just under 15 minutes to play. Latham tried to get the Beavers within one in the final 10 minutes, but her shot was saved and UCLA added one more in the final minute to take the win by three.
Redshirt freshman Kyllie-Ann Yasutake made her first career start in the match.
Oregon State will return to Lorenz Field this week, when the Beavers take on Washington on Thursday.
