February 11, 2018 | Wrestling
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Oregon State wrestling jumped out to a big lead, but had to fend off a CSU Bakersfield squad down the stretch on Sunday night inside the Icardo Center, earning a 23-13 win in its final dual of the season.
The Beavers finished the season with a 6-6 overall record, and 2-2 in Pacific-12 Conference matches.
The starting bout at 197 pounds featured two top-20 ranked wrestlers, both of whom attended Sultana High School in Apple Valley, Calif. It was No. 14 Corey Griego who came away with a decisive victory over former high school teammate No. 15 Matt Williams. He has won eight bouts in a row after an 11-10 decision on Sunday night.
Heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi totaled his most points in a single match this season. The No. 8-ranked heavyweight started with two first period takedowns. The redshirt senior opened the flood gates in the second and third periods with a combined 10 takedowns between the final periods. Dhesi has won nine bouts in a row, and finishes the dual season with a 9-0 record.
No. 12-ranked Ronnie Bresser won the third-straight bout of the night for the Beavers. Bresser built up an 8-1 lead in the first period behind two takedowns and a four-point near fall. He would win by decision over No. 27 Sergio Mendez, 9-4.
Oregon State led CSU Bakersfield after three bouts, 11-0.
The Roadrunners would claim the next two matches at 133 and 141 pounds. Devan Turner dropped a close 4-2 decision to No. 28-ranked Sean Nickell, before Jack Hathaway lost a 9-5 decision to No. 25 Russell Rohlfing.
Oregon State's had been cut to 11-6.
149-pounder Josh Reyes won his second straight over Noah Blakely-Beanes by decision, 7-4. Reyes got a takedown in each of three periods, with the dagger coming in the final minute of the third period. Reyes' win pushed the Beavers lead to 14-6.
Freshman Hunter Willits has been in close matches with ranked opponents all year, but it was tonight that he finally got the better. Willits upset the 15th ranked 157-pounder Coleman Hammond with an escape in the third period and a takedown in the final 30-seconds winning by decision 3-2. The Beavers now led 17-6.
CSUB began to mount a comeback at 165 pounds. Jacob Thalin won by major decision over Rodney Williams, 14-5. The win pulled the Roadrunners deficit to 17-10.
Freshman 174-pounder Myles Terry secured the Beavers victory. Trailing 13-1 in the third period, the St. Helens native found double under-hooks throwing Lorenzo De La Riva to his back to get his first pin of his collegiate career. Terry's win would prove to be the deciding bout of the evening.
