Beavers’ V8 Wins B Final at Clemson
April 14, 2018 | Women's Rowing
CLEMSON, S.C. – The Oregon State Women's Varsity 8 won the B Final at the Clemson Invitational and was voted as the regatta's "Breakout Boat" Saturday evening.
The Beavers finished the regatta ninth out of 21 teams in a field that included eight ranked teams.
OSU's V8, which was powered by Alina Hagstrom, Olivia Ashby, Mimi Ballinger, Eliza Adams, Paige Phillips, Katie Descheemaeker, Abigail Watts, Scout Sutton, and coxed by Heather Thompson, raced to fifth and fourth place finishes in heat racing that took place on Friday evening and Saturday morning.
However, Saturday evening the Beavers' top crew raced past the field of seven boats covering the course on Lake Hartwell in a time of 6-minutes, 19.40-seconds more than two seconds ahead of crews from Syracuse and Louisville which they had lost to earlier in the weekend.
In the Second Varsity 8, Oregon State used third and sixth place heat finishes to advance to the B Final. In the final the Beavers went nose-to-nose with Northeastern and Duke for fourth place. OSU (6:35.30) came in three-hundredths of a second behind Northeastern (6:35.27) and held off the Blue Devils (6:36.67) for a fifth-place finish Saturday evening.
The Beavers' Varsity 4+ also qualified for the B Final behind a pair of fifth place finishes in the heats. OSU recorded a time of 7:19.60 to finish seventh in a tight race, just three seconds behind Syracuse's fourth place crew (7:16.29).
Oregon State is idle next weekend before getting one last race at the Longhorn Invitational in Texas on April 28 before Pac-12 Championships in May.
