Beavers’ Season Ends in Raleigh
April 07, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 14 Oregon State gymnastics team's season came to an end Saturday evening at the NCAA Raleigh Regional Championships. The Beavers, who hadn't counted a fall all season, struggled in the final rotation counting a pair of falls and finished sixth at the regional.
Entering the final rotation, the Beavers were in third place trailing second-place Nebraska 148.150-147.475. With only the top two finishing teams at each regional advancing to the NCAA Championship round, OSU needed a perfect set on the balance beam and for the Huskers to falter on the uneven bars. However, falls by three straight competitors in the middle of the lineup ensured the team's fate.
"I'm disappointed with how we finished the meet today," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We were in a good place, doing our job like we have all season and even though we weren't in a position to advance, we were having a solid meet. We have such a young team and this has to be a learning moment. The women on this team that will be back with us next year have to know that we have higher expectations and that they are better than this result. This experience will be a great motivator through the offseason to get back to the success we are accustomed to."
The Beavers, who were the third seed in the Raleigh regional, began the meet on a bye. However, they quickly established themselves as a contender in the second rotation on the floor exercise. Kaitlyn Yanish led the Orange and Black with a 9.90 to tie for third on the event. Isis Lowery and Destinee Davis added scores of 9.850 and OSU posted a 49.225 on its best event to move into third place.
Moving to the vault, Oregon State hit their season average scoring 49.100. Yanish again led the OSU lineup with a team-best 9.850 to tie her career-high. Mary Jacobsen and McKenna Singley each added scores of 9.825.
At the midway point, OSU had a score of 98.325, but top-seeded LSU had tallied 98.800 and Nebraska was putting together a strong performance as well at 98.775.
Following another bye, the Beavers headed to the bars where senior Shireen Khamedoost got the squad off to a strong start at 9.850. Singley and Halli Briscoe matched her scores and Mariana Colussi-Pelaez added a 9.825.
A score of 49.150 on the bars put the Beavers solidly in third place leading fourth-place NC State 147.475-146.875 as they moved the balance beam to finish the meet.
