May 08, 2018 | Women's Golf
MADISON, Wis. – Nicole Schroeder tied a school record at the NCAA Division I Regionals on Tuesday to put the Oregon State women's golf team in contention to advance to the NCAA Championships for the second time in program history.
Â
Schroeder fired a 6-under 66 in the second round to tie teammate Olivia Benzin for the lowest round in school history. Benzin set the mark at the Ron Moore Invitational in Highlands Ranch, Colo., this past fall.
Â
The Beavers are tied for fourth place in the 18-team field with a 2-under 289-285--574 at the par-72, 6,313-yard University Ridge Golf Course.
Â
Duke (14-under 562), Virginia (6-under 570) and USC (3-under 573) hold down the top three spots, while Arizona State (2-under 574) is tied with the Beavers for fourth place. Illinois, Northwestern and Ohio State are all tied for sixth with a 1-over 577.
Â
The top six teams at the Madison Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Â
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole NCAA Regionals begins at 8 a.m. CT (6 a.m. PT) on Wednesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Â
"It's fun to see Nicole take control of her game and grow as a player," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "I'm looking forward to seeing them compete and battle one more day."
Â
Schroeder, a sophomore from Rocklin, Calif., carded a then-career best 4-under 68 in Monday's first round and followed that on Tuesday with a 6-under 66 to put her in first place in the 96-player field with a 10-under 134. Erin Harper of Indiana is in second place with a 6-under 138, and Leona Maguire of Duke and Jaclyn Lee of Ohio State are tied for third with a 5-under 139.
Â
Schroeder's best career finish is third place at the Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah this past March and her best three-round score is a 4-under 212 while competing as an individual at the Ron Moore Invitational in October 2017.
Â
Freshman Ellie Slama had two birdies and eight pars over her final 10 holes on Tuesday to card an even-par 72. She's tied for 44th place overall with a 3-over 75-72--147.
Â
Senior Susie Cavanagh, junior Olivia Benzin and sophomore Mari Nishiura are all tied for 52nd place with a 4-over 148. Cavanagh had scores of 75-73, Benzin posted rounds of 72-76 and Nishiura dropped a pair of 74's.
Â
The Beavers advanced to the NCAA Championships one time previously, in 1998, when they finished in 10th place in Madison, Wis.
