Beavers Battle to Draw With Xavier
August 31, 2018 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's soccer team battled Xavier to a 0-0 draw Friday evening at Lorenz Field in Corvallis, Ore. The Beavers dominated the shot count and nearly found the net on numerous occasions in the match, including a Don Tchilao shot off the post in the 90th minute.
Â
"Xavier is a really good team and I expect them to have a very good year," said Oregon State head coach Terry Boss. "I think our team matured today. Every time we are on the field we get a little bit better. This is a game we wanted a little bit more from, but I'm proud of the way we ended. We started a little bit slow, but we came on strong. If that game had lasted five more minutes I think we would've won it."
Â
Overall Oregon State out-shot Xavier, who is currently receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, 19-6 and held a 12-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Â
Both sides controlled possession for stretches during the opening 45 minutes.
Â
Hassani Dotson and Sofiane Djeffal took shots from distance in the first half, but the teams headed to the break level at 0.
Â
Eric Diaz came close to putting the Beavers on top in the 56th minute, but his curling effort drifted just over the crossbar. Oregon State followed that up with back-to-back corner kicks in the 69th.
Â
Djeffal came close again in the 74th on a shot from long range. Gloire Amanda followed with an effort moments later, but his attempt was blocked. Dotson forced a diving save with a rocket in the 80th minute.
Â
Tchilao nearly netted his third goal of the season in the dying moments of regulation, curling a left-footed effort off the post.
Â
Diaz almost ended the match just two minutes into overtime, but his shot from 20 yards out took a deflection and hooked wide.
Â
Oregon State led the shot count 10-2 in the second half and 7-1 in the two overtime periods. Amanda led the Beavers with five shots, while Diaz took four.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper Adrian Fernandez posted his first collegiate clean sheet.
Â
The Beavers will hit the road for the first time this season on Monday, when they head east to take on Penn State.
