Beavers Win Team Title at Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open
March 16, 2019 | Women's Track & Field
OREGON CITY – The Oregon State track and field team opened the season on the right note cruising to a team victory at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open hosted by Clackamas Community College on Friday and Saturday in Oregon City.
"The women competed really well," stated head coach Louie Quintana. "We had some nice conditions to be able to compete in and we took advantage."
The Beavers took the overall title racking up 199 team points. Their closest competitor was Portland which accumulated 102 points. Northwest Christian (87), Lewis & Clark (76) and Western Oregon (76) round out the top five.
During the weekend, Oregon State captured individual crowns in nine different events including the hammer throw, discus, pole vault, shot put, 1,500m, 100m hurdles, 400m, 400m hurdles, 200m and 5,000m.
Junior throwing specialist Lindsay McShane backed up a first place finish, and school record, in the hammer throw on Friday with a win in the discus kicking off the events on Saturday. Keely McLaughlin, who took the silver medal, became the No. 7 all-time distance holder with a throw of 149-feet, 10-inches.
The Beavers claimed the top three spots in the shot put thanks to McLaughlin, Taylor Crockem and Sydney Guthrie-Baker. McLaughlin now sits at No. 2 all time at OSU with a throw of 48-feet, 10.25-inches. Crockem and Guthrie-Baker move up to spots No. 3 and No. 4 with marks of 48-feet, 5.25-inches and 46-feet, 1.25-iches, respectively.
"Hats off to the throws group this weekend," said Quintana. "They were absolutely top notch, and executed well in all of their events."
Gillette Field made her season debut in the pole vault after sitting out the indoor season. Field and Tory Edwards both cleared 11-feet, 7.75-inches with Field getting the overall win on less attempts.
"It was nice to see Gigi [Gillette Field] out vaulting in uniform again," said Quintana. "Like a lot of technical events, these early season meets are about getting technique down and corrected as the important meets ramp up."
Oregon State dominated the 1,500 meters with the Beavers student-athletes finishing in first through fourth place. Lexi Reed, 4:30.31, led the pack just inching out a win over teammate Haley Wolf, 4:30.51. Meanwhile Brigette Takeuchi, 4:34.26, and Rebecca Ledsham, 4:36.43, were closely behind.
Claire Corbitt was the winner of the 100-meter hurdles running a blistering 15.05-second time. Saskia McNairy finished close behind in second with at time of 15.39 seconds.
In the 400 meters junior Tarisa Olinski outpaced her teammate Lauren Miller by nearly a second for the individual title. Olinski finished with a time of 58.63-seconds, while Miller crossed the finish line in 59.46-seconds.
Greta Van Calcar has continued her stretch of great runs from the indoor season into the outdoor season. Van Calcar finished the event 11-seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, running the No. 8 time in OSU history at 16-minutes, 47.54-seconds.
It was another one-two-three finish for Oregon State in the 200 meters. McNairy captured her first crown of the day at 24.99-seconds, while Lauren Miller (25.29) and Tarisa Olinski (25.93) took home silver and bronze.
