Beavers Fall in Five to Oklahoma
September 05, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Oregon State volleyball team (2-1) took its first stumble of the 2019 season Thursday evening. The Beavers jumped to a two sets to none lead before succumbing to Oklahoma (2-2) in five sets in what was both teams' opening match of the Hoosier Invite.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 18-25, 16-18.
The Beavers, who served twice for the match in the final set, couldn't put the game away. OSU went down 3-0 early in the fifth but answered with a 9-1 burst forcing the Sooners into both of their timeouts. OU whittled it down taking the lead at 12-11. The Beavers fought back from a 14-12 deficit staving off match point twice with a Haylie Bennett solo block and a setting error by the Sooners. Maddie Goings followed by converting her 25th kill of the night to give OSU the lead at 15-14 and its first match point opportunity. Just one sideout later, Goings knocked down her 26th kill to establish a new career high giving the Beavers a second crack at match point. However, a kill by OU's leading hitter Sarah Sanders followed by back-to-back aces from Aysia Harty sealed the match.
Oregon State traded blows with Oklahoma through the majority of the opening set before using a 4-1 spurt, that included a pair of kills by Kory Cheshire, to take the score from 20-18 to 24-19. OSU held on to take the set 25-22. Goings led the Beavers with four kills while Cecilee Max-Brown recorded three in the set.
In the second set, the teams battled back-and-forth to an 18-18 tie before the Beavers used a pair of blocks during a 4-0 run to go up 21-18. Consecutive kills by Amy Underdown sent Oregon State to match-point when Goings once again put the ball on the floor to secure the set, 25-20. Chloe Brown registered six kills and Goings added five in the set to pace the Beavers' offense.
OSU led the third set 15-11 before the Sooners came alive. Oklahoma used a 14-5 scoring run to close the third set to steal the momentum from the early sets.
The fourth set was one of fits and starts for the Beavers. OSU used a 4-1 run to tie the match at 9-9, then used a four-point run to close the gap on the Sooners to 15-14. But Oklahoma answered with a 7-0 run of its own to put the set out of reach at 22-14 and held on, 25-18, to force the fifth set.
Game Notes: Maddie Goings registered a match-high and career-best 26 kills for the Beavers … Maddie Sheehan registered her second double-double of the season (39 assists, 14 digs) … Junior libero Grace Massey registered 28 digs to giving her 1,050 in her career past Darby Reeder (1,033, 2012-15) and Nikki Neuburger (1,036, 1999-2002) into 14th in OSU history … After three matches, redshirt senior Kory Cheshire has yet to make an attack error (24 kills, 0 errors, 38 attacks) and has a .526 hitting percentage.
Next Up: Oregon State is up again twice tomorrow to face the host Hoosiers at 7 a.m. PT and then return to the court to take on Yale at 2 p.m. PT to conclude the Hoosier Invite.
