Beavers Fall to Sun Devils for First Loss of Season
January 12, 2020 | Women's Basketball
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 3 Oregon State women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2019-20 season Sunday afternoon, as the Beavers fell to Arizona State 55-47 in Tempe, Ariz.
Â
With the defeat, OSU moves to 15-1 on the season, 3-1 in Pac-12 play. Arizona State goes to 13-4 on the year after completing a sweep of the Oregon schools.
Â
"Arizona State never quits, and we knew this was going to be a battle," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "I was proud of the way we fought back to give ourselves a chance. We have two freshman starting for us, and they are only going to continue growing over the next two months of Pac-12 play. You could see it today – they got better as the game went on. We're going to get better and better as we go. There's nothing but growth ahead for this team, and we usually take adversity and handle it pretty well."
Â
Mikayla Pivec led the Beavers with 13 points and 10 rebounds, as she passed Deven Hunter to move into fourth on Oregon State's career rebounds list. Freshman Taylor Jones tallied a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Destiny Slocum tallied 13 points. Freshman Kennedy Brown recorded three blocks.
Â
The Beavers held a 47-37 edge in rebounding in the contest.
Â
Oregon State scored the first four points of the game, but Arizona State came back with 13 unanswered to end the first quarter up 13-4. The Sun Devils headed to the break leading 24-14.
Â
The Beavers battled back in the third quarter, getting back within four late in the period, before heading to the closing frame behind 39-32.
Â
The Oregon State defense clamped down in the middle part of the fourth, holding ASU scoreless for a stretch of over four minutes to level the score on a Slocum 3-pointer with 2:40 to play. The Sun Devils were able to retake the advantage from there, on their way to the eight-point win.
Â
The Beavers will return home next week for a pair of Pac-12 home games, as California and Stanford visit Gill Coliseum.
