Oregon State Falls to Colorado in Five on Friday
November 03, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell in a five-set match to Colorado (25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 18-25, 9-15) on Friday night.
32 errors cost the Beavers (9-14, 4-9 Pac-12), with exactly half of them coming in the final two sets as they could not hold off the Buffaloes from coming back.
A pair of Beavers – Amanda Burns (27 assists and 10 digs) and Mychael Vernon (20 kills and 13 digs) – tallied double-doubles while Ryan White led the defense with 19 digs. Megan Sheridan (14) and Peyton Suess (10) both added double-figures in kills to propel the offense, while Elizabeth Schuster pushed across 20 assists.
Holding a wire-to-wire lead in the opening set, Oregon State used a 9-6 run from 10-9 to give them the needed separation to strike first. When Colorado crept within four late in the set, the Beavers rattled off the next five to clinch behind kills from Vernon, Suess and Sheridan to make it 25-18. Vernon closed the first set with a team-high five kills while Burns had nine helpers and White had six digs while the team hit .393.
While Oregon State looked for a 2-0 advantage when they held a 20-17 lead, a timeout to swing momentum was just what Colorado needed to turn things. After the break, the Buffaloes tallied six of the next nine points to deadlock it at 23 and make it interesting. Consecutive kills by Colorado from Skyy Howard and Lily Dwinell secured the set and evened it for the visitors.
Thanks to a .316 clip and six more Vernon kills, OSU took the third to push the Buffaloes to the brink. White led the defensive effort with six digs that held Colorado to just a .194 hitting percentage. Starting the frame on a 4-1 run, the Beavers staved off a Buffaloes attack as the lead shrunk to just one and ultimately went back-and-forth until 15-15. When CU got within a point at 19-18, the Beavs held on, taking the necessary six to win it.
Momentum shifted once more in the match, as the Buffaloes found themselves down a point at 11-10 in the fourth. Colorado took advantage of a Vernon miscue to tie things at 11 and did not look back as they would secure the set at 25-18. Errors plagued the Beavers as they committed six in the set and could not close the match. Offensively, they were held to a match-low .194 hitting percentage.
Keeping up the momentum from the fourth set, Colorado opened the pivotal fifth with six of the set's eight points to take control. Oregon State pulled back within two twice – at 10-8 and 11-9 – but could not overcome miscues as they fell short in the set.
Oregon State will honor their seniors for Senior Day on Sunday when they welcome Utah to Gill Coliseum. Action against the Utes will start at noon and can be seen on Pac-12 Mountain.
