Beavers Sweep Bakersfield to Open Pac-12 Slate
December 15, 2023 | Wrestling
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Dominant from the start of the match, the 16th-ranked Oregon State swept CSU Bakersfield by a 48-0 score on Friday night. The dual marked the beginning of Pac-12 play for both sides.
Oregon State (4-1, 1-0 Pac-12) used four falls and a technical fall to secure the sweep and clinched their third sweep of the season and first in the Pac-12 since the 2021-22 campaign. A trio of Beavers – Maximo Renteria, Travis Wittlake and Trey Munoz – wrestled up a weight class in the dual.
In one of just five bouts to go the full time, Brandon Kaylor (125) wasted little time in building a big lead. The Washingtonian built a 6-2 lead after a frame and secured the conference win with a 10-2 win over Richard Castro-Sandoval. Making his OSU debut, Maximo Renteria (133) made his presence known with a strong end to his bout. Scoreless after one against Santino Sanchez, he used a pair of takedowns and an escape to stretch a 4-0 lead to his 11-2 major decision win.
Pins from Cleveland Belton (141) and Isaiah Crosby (157) sandwiched a win by forfeit for Nash Singleton (149) to give OSU a 25-0 lead at the break. Needing just a takedown, Belton completed the pin of Luis Ramos in just 1:05 while Crosby needed just 1:11 to pin Devyn Flores-Che.
Resuming the dual, Matthew Olguin (165) pulled away in the third from a 6-3 lead for an 11-4 win over Guillermo Escobedo before Kekana Fouret (174) pinned Evan Gilbert for his first Pac-12 win.
Wittlake – also making his Pac-12 debut – racked up the points on the way to a 19-3 win at technical fall at 184 over Braden Smelser. Munoz needed just :36 to pin Khristian Dove at 197 before Charley Hastriter (HWT) wrapped the team win with a 7-5 decision over Jake Andrews.
Oregon State will be off until their home opener against top-ranked Penn State on Friday, January 5. The first bout between the Beavs and Nittany Lions is slated for 5 p.m. and can be seen on Pac-12 Network Oregon.
