CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's basketball team took down Cal Poly 70-63 in double-overtime Monday evening at Gill Coliseum.
Michael Rataj made his first start of the season, recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as he went 9-for-18 from the floor. KC Ibekwe went 6-for-8 to finish with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Tyler Bilodeau tallied 11 points.
Jordan Pope finished in double-figures yet again, scoring 10 points. Josiah Lake II narrowly missed a double-double with nine points, nine boards and three steals.
Oregon State held Cal Poly to 34.4 percent in the game, and out-scored the Mustangs 52-20 in the paint. The Beavers did not convert a 3-pointer in the contest.
OSU played the contest without the services of Dexter Akanno, who was unavailable due to injury.
The defenses dominated the early going, as the Mustangs led 7-6 eight minutes into the contest. Oregon State used a 7-0 run to take a 21-20 lead with four minutes to go in the first half.
Cal Poly led 28-25 at the break. Bilodeau finished with 11 first-half points.
Oregon State wasted little time taking the lead in the second half, scoring the first six points of the period to go in front 31-28.
The team traded punches from there, as the Beavers held a 41-38 advantage with seven minutes to play. Cal Poly retook the lead with just over five minutes to play.
The Mustangs led by two with two minutes on the clock, but Rataj leveled the score with less than a minute remaining to force overtime at 49-49.
The teams traded punches in the extra period. The Beavers led by two with 14 seconds to go, but Cal Poly leveled the score with 3.8 on the clock to send the game to a second extra period at 60 apiece.
Lake II came up with some big free throw in the second overtime to help Oregon State secure the seven-point win.
The Beavers will remain at home on Saturday when Utah Valley visits Gill Coliseum.
