WESTFIELD, Ind. – Madde Sund fired a career-best 4-under 68 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the first round of the NCAA Westfield Regional on Monday.
The Beavers are tied for fourth place after opening the NCAA Regionals with a 2-under 286 at the par-72, 6,300-yard Club at Chatham Hills. Oregon State combined to go 6 under on the last two holes of the day, the par-5, 500-yard 17th and par-4, 354-yard 18th.
The top five teams in the field after Wednesday's final round will advance to the NCAA National Championships, which are scheduled for May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Tulsa (9-under 279), Mississippi State (8-under 280) and Michigan (5-under 283) hold down the top three spots. Iowa State is tied for fourth with Oregon State with a 2-under 286. Virginia and Vanderbilt are tied for fifth with a 1-under 287.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 5 a.m. PT (8 a.m. ET) on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Sund had five birdies and only one bogey to post her best score as a collegian, a 4-under 68, that has her in a tie for second place. Her best previous score was a 1-under 71 in the first round of last year's NCAA Regional in Franklin, Tenn. The five birdies are tied for the third most in the field.
Chayse Gomez had 15 pars and one bogey through the first 16 holes but ended the day with back-to-back birdies to card a 1-under 71 for a tie for 13th place. It's her sixth sub-par score of the season and 14th in her four-year Oregon State career.
Amanda Minni had three birdies and three bogeys to shoot an even-par 72 that has her in a tie for 24th place. This is the first time Minni has competed at the NCAA Regionals in her six years as a Beaver.
Kyra Ly eagled the par-5, 485-yard 13th hole but followed that with a bogey and triple bogey. She responded in a big way with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 before finishing the round with a par on 18 to card a 3-over 75. Ly was one of only five golfers in the 66-player field to get an eagle in the first round.
Danique Stokmans finished the first round with a 5-over 77.
Julia Lopez Ramirez of Mississippi State holds the individual lead with a 5-under 67. Hannah Levi of Mississippi State and Lovisa Gunnar of Tulsa are tied with Sund for second with a 4-under 68.
