Oregon State Hosts Arizona Schools This Weekend
January 11, 2024 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State returns home this weekend with an opportunity to build on its perfect 10-0 record inside the confines of Gill Coliseum against Arizona and Arizona State.
Â
The Beavers are hungry for a bounce back weekend after nearly taking two games from top-10 opponents in Los Angeles last week. OSU narrowly fell to no. 9 USC and no. 2 UCLA on the road.
Â
This weekend's foes include an Arizona team that is receiving votes in the latest AP Poll. The first 2,500 fans at Friday's game receive an Oregon State/BECU beanie. Fans are also encouraged to bring stuffed animals for the Teddy Bear Toss. The toss will happen at halftime with the stuffed animals heading to local shelters.

STARTING FIVE
A HEIDE IN THE POST
Sela Heide's transfer from Cal to Oregon State continued a family legacy started by her parents, both Oregon State basketball players. Her mom, Sissel Pierce, anchored the OSU defense with 2.9 blocks per game as a senior while her dad, Jason, was a two-year starter who averaged 10.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Â
DEFEND THE DAM
Oregon State's defensive prowess is on display again this season. The Beavs limit their opponents to 33.5% shooting, first in the Pac-12 and seventh nationally. The Beavers give no room for second chances, claiming 33.2 defensive rebounds per game, placing them third in the nation and first in the Pac-12. Against USC, the Beavs contained the nation's second-leading scorer, JuJu Watkins, to 33% shooting from the floor, forcing her to take an 33 shots to score 23 points (with her remaining 5 coming on free throws).
Â
THE BEAVER STATE'S BEST
Oregon State continued signing Oregon's top talent in the 2023 class, adding guards Donovyn Hunter (ESPN no. 82 in the nation) and Kennedie Shuler. The duo each led their teams to the OSAA 6A State Semifinals last season. Hunter's South Medford squad won the matchup and advanced to the state title game. Both Beavs were named 6A All-State and both earned league player of the year honors in their respective conferences.
