SAN DIEGO – Seven service errors and a sub-.200 hitting percentage led to a three-set loss for the Oregon State volleyball team against San Diego.
Oregon State (3-10, 1-2 WCC) was held to a .191 clip with a match-low .094 in a pivotal second set while the host Toreros used percentages of .406 and .417 to seize momentum.
Vivian Light (nine kills) and Emma Lilo (20 assists) led the Oregon State offense on the afternoon while Lilo led the defense with nine digs, which was one shy of a career-best. Annika Hester and Alexis Rodriguez also aided the defense with seven digs apiece while Rodriguez and Lauren Rumel combined for six blocks, split evenly.
The match also marked Lilo's 11th outing with at least 20 assists. Iris Coba and Alondra Paz each tallied two service aces, a stat in which Oregon State had six.
San Diego pulled away in the opening stanza, coupling a .406 clip with scoring runs of 7-0 and 4-0 to take the first one. Trailing 23-17 in the late stages, the Beavers brought it as close as three at 24-21, fighting off three Torero set points before a kill ended it at 25-21.
Held to a sub-.100 hitting rate, San Diego put the Beavers on the brink with a 13-point win in the second frame. Once again, the Toreros used a strong run – 9-1 – to build separation on the way to a 25-12 win.
Trying to fend off the sweep, Oregon State got out to a hot start, leading by as many as five – 17-12 – before the Toreros fought back. San Diego used a 4-0 run, turning a 18-15 hole to a lead at 19-18 they never lost.
The Beavers will return home this week for Alumni Weekend, where they will welcome Santa Clara to Corvallis. First serve on Thursday, the 10th, is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
