November 13, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
STOCKTON, Calif. – Despite taking the first two sets and holding the opposition to just a .103 hitting percentage, the Oregon State volleyball team fell in five sets in a road match to Pacific on Wednesday night.
The match slipped from the Beavers (8-15, 6-6 WCC) at 25-14, 25-22, 15-25, 21-25, 12-15.
Offensively, the Beavers were led in kills by Annika Hester and Lauren Rumel, who each tallied 16 on the night while Amanda Burns was a third OSU student-athlete to put up double-digits as she recorded 10. Emma Lilo (36) and Alara Doganyuz (16) led in assists to keep the attack going. Yasemin Narlioglu led the defense with 22 digs while Vivian Light and Rumel each had 11.
The Beavers got out to a hot start in the match, hitting .312 and limited the hosts to .027 in the first frame on the way to the 25-14 set win. Hester put up four kills and Zaria Thornton tallied three to her credit while Lilo dished out a set-best eight helpers to get the attack underway. Defensively, Narlioglu used seven digs to lead the pressure on Pacific. The Beavers used a key 7-0 run from the near-onset of the frame to go up 7-3 and never looked back.
Eager to double the lead and put the match out of reach, Oregon State once again held the Tigers to a low hitting rate (.171) on the way to a second set win at 25-22. The Beavers found themselves down early but flipped the momentum with another timely run – at 6-0 – to take a lead they wouldn't lose on the way to the three-point win. Rumel's six kills and seven Lilo assists proved to lead the attack while Light dug out six from the Tigers for the 2-0 lead.
Consecutive poor hitting sets doomed the Beavers into another five-set match. A .105 clip in the third followed by a .190 in the next one helped Pacific back into it. The Tigers took the decisive fifth set as they opened it on a 7-3 run and withstood a late charge by Oregon State before ending it with a final kill to make it 15-12.
Oregon State will open the final homestand of the season on Saturday against San Diego. First serve against the Toreros is set for 12:30 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
