Munoz Wins Navy Open Title as Beavs Finish in Second
November 23, 2024 | Wrestling
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Making their way across the country, the 28th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team turned in a second-place team finish with 130.5 points at the 2024 Navy Classic.
In individual competition, Trey Munoz – ranked seventh nationally – took the 197 lb. championship while 10 others – Maximo Renteria (125 – 2nd), Chase DeBlaere (133 – 5th), Nash Singleton (141 – 4th), Ayden Garver (149 – 3rd), McKinley Robbins (149 – 4th), Ethan Stiles (157 – 2nd), Sean Harman (174 – 6th), TJ McDonnell (184 – 3rd), Brett Mower (HWT – 3rd) and Charley Hastriter (HWT – 4th) – all turned in top-six finishes.
Munoz – the two-time returning All-American – ran the table with an undefeated 3-0 day that featured wins by fall and major decision to punch his ticket to the championship bout. He capped his afternoon in Maryland with a 4-2 win by decision against Patrick Brophy from The Citadel to claim the crown.
Renteria – ranked 24th – was just a move away from taking the weight class championship over the two-time defending All-American. He cruised to the semifinals after a lopsided win at major decision before facing Nebraska opponents in the final two bouts. He outlasted Alan Koehler in the semis after an extra before falling short to a second consecutive Cornhusker.
DeBlaere was on the winning side of four of his five bouts on the day, losing only to 14th-ranked Kurt Phipps from Bucknell. Of his four victories, the Minnesota product used two falls and a major decision on the way to the fifth-place finish.
Two close setbacks late derailed Singleton's (141) then-perfect day. The Roseburg, Oregon, native cruised to a 3-0 start before he fell in sudden victory in the semifinal bout before coming up short in the third-place match to a ranked opponent in 24th-ranked Dylan Chappell from Bucknell.
Making his season debut, Garver (149) burst onto the scene with a third-place day. After eking out a win to open the action at 3-2, he clinched his spot in the quarterfinals with a major decision win at 13-3. He then defeated teammate Robbins in the third-place match after dropping the semifinal bout. Robbins made his way to the third-place bout behind a pair of decisions.
Stiles, the Pac-12's reigning Wrestler of the Week, fell short in the championship bout to a former teammate – No. 3 Antrell Taylor of Nebraska – to snap a streak of six consecutive bouts won to open the season. Not heavily challenged until the semifinal round, Stiles cruised to wins via major decision and technical fall before a close three-point win at decision booked his trip to the final. The Illinois product fell short in the extra time.
Harman captured sixth place with a technical fall win to start his day but battled with tough competition later on, including a setback to 22nd-ranked Danny Wask of Navy. McDonnell strung together a major decision and fall on his way to the third-place finish.
The Beaver heavyweights finished three and four as they battled each other to close it out with Mower coming ahead with a 7-4 decision. Mower started his day with a major decision and fall before dropping his semifinal appearance, setting up the meeting with his teammate. Hastriter used a decision and a major before his semifinal bout ahead of facing Mower.
The Beavers will have the upcoming weekend off before opening December at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas. Coverage of the tournament will be handled by FloWrestling from December 6-7.
