MAUI, Hawai'i – Roommates Catarina Ferreira and Tiara Bolden combined for 49 points and Oregon State opened the Maui Classic with an 80-58 win over Western Kentucky.
The win was a return to form for the Beavs in several ways as OSU shot 38.1 percent from three with a solid defense that held WKU to 35.1 percent from the floor. Four players had multiple assists.
Ferreira led the team with 26 points – a career-high – and snagged 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She also dished out four assists while contributing two steals and a block to the defensive effort.
Bolden scored 23 points with a 3-of-6 effort from three and shot 10-for-15 from the floor. The senior handed out two assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Her early triples got the Beavs out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter and a 36-23 advantage at halftime.
The Beavs pulled away in the third quarter with a 16-2 run. Ferreira keyed it with a three from beyond the arc and an and-one. Kelsey Rees got the run started with four of the first six points. The senior finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block.
Cloe Vecina contributed big minutes at the guard spot while scoring seven points and grabbing two steals. The freshmen was 4-for-4 and the Beavs made 22-of-26 shots (84.6%) at the free-throw line.
