December 20, 2024 | Wrestling
OREM, Utah – The Oregon State wrestling team fell on the road, 20-14, on Friday night to Utah Valley.
Kekana Fouret (165), 21st-ranked Brett Mower (HWT), 13th-ranked Maximo Renteria (125) and CJ Hamblin (157) registered wins for the Beavers (1-3) against the Wolverines.
Opening up with a 7-0 first behind a takedown and a four point near-fall, Fouret built up a lead he wouldn't concede in the 165-lb. bout. Kaden Bennie tried to claw his way back but only got within four at 9-5 before Fouret stretched it to the final six-point margin following the riding time bonus.
Mower closed the dual's first half with a dramatic come-from-behind win, defeating Jack Forbes, 11-8, at decision. Finding himself down 8-3 in the second, Mower chipped away at his deficit before finally tying it up at 8 with an escape to open the final frame. Not wanting to go to a sudden-victory period, Mower used one last takedown to secure the win.
Renteria used one escape in his bout with Talen Eck but that's all that was needed. Following his selection of bottom to open the second after a scoreless first, Renteria escaped from Eck's control before riding out the rest of the dual. The one-point advantage doubled after Renteria clinched the riding time advantage to secure the win at decision.
A 13-point first for Hamblin proved to be pivotal in his technical fall (19-4; 6:29) win over Ryker Fullmer. Hamblin tallied the 13 from a trio of takedowns and a four point near-fall before closing it in the third with two more takedowns to make it 19. The win was Hamblin's first this season by technical fall.
Oregon State will close 2024 in Nevada on Sunday with the Reno Tournament of Champions.
