September 28, 2024 | Men's Soccer
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Oregon State men's soccer team opened its 2024 conference season with a win, taking a 2-0 victory over Santa Clara Saturday evening in Santa Clara, Calif.
Sergi Solans opened the scoring in the first half, netting his team-high fifth goal of the year. Aidan Marquez sealed the deal in the second half, netting the first goal of his collegiate career.
Fabian Straudi recorded his sixth assist of the season, extending his streak to five-straight games with a point.
Enzo Newman found himself in on goal in the 11th minute, as an intricate piece of build-up place afforded him a scoring chance on the right side of the box, but his effort was off target. Arnau Farnos followed that up with an acrobatic shot in the 21st minute, but his effort was wide of the post.
Solans opened the scoring in the 28th minute, converting a volley from eight yards out off a free-kick assist from Andrew De Gannes. Gandhi Cruz came up with a diving save in the 38th minute to preserve the advantage.
Ellis Spikner nearly doubled the Beaver advantage just before the break, but the Santa Clara keeper was quick off his line to make a save, as Oregon State headed to the intermission up 1-0.
Marquez found the net with half an hour remaining in the match, taking a feed from Straudi down the left side before slotting his shot past the keeper.
The Beavers were reduced to 10 players in the 80th minute, as Mark Wieder was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. Newman came up with a big play in the 82nd minute, heading a ball off the line to maintain the two-goal advantage. Oregon State hung on from there to secure the victory.
Cruz made six saves to hold the clean sheet, as he returned to the starting goalkeeper position.
The Beavers will return home Friday for a matchup with Pacific.
